Silver Crest Safe Walk Route Change

Children using scooters and bikes cross the street at the Herriman Rose Boulevard east-west crosswalk, guided by a crossing guard holding a stop sign. The crossing guard is wearing a reflective safety vest. The background shows a residential area with buildings, greenery, and mountains under a cloudy sky.

For parents and guardians of Silver Crest Elementary students:

There will be a change to the safe walking route for students of Silver Crest Elementary School, effective at the start of the 2024-25 school year. The adjustment will affect students walking to the school from the Herriman Towne Center to the school.

An informational open house will be held Tuesday, July 30, 3-5 p.m. at the city hall's Community Room (5355 W. Main Street), with staff members and law enforcement officers to answer your questions.

While we understand this route is likely less convenient for most, this change addresses safety concerns to ensure a safer crossing environment for students and crossing guards.

What is Happening?

  • The north-south crosswalk at Herriman Rose Boulevard across Main Street will no longer be a designated school crosswalk and will no longer staffed by crossing guards.
  • Students will now use the traffic signal at Black Locust Way to cross Main Street.
  • Two crossing guards will be placed at the Black Locust Way crossing, with one remaining at Herriman Rose Boulevard to cross east/west.
  • The change will be effective from the start of the 2024-25 school year.

Why the Change?

  • The current setup at Herriman Rose Boulevard is not sufficiently safe despite the use of A-frames and two crossing guards.
  • The new location at Black Locust Way has a traffic signal, offering a safer crossing environment.
  • Safety concerns have been raised about the previous crossing, including close calls with traffic.
  • Student and crossing guard safety is a higher priority than convenience
