Help Herriman City Ensure Safe Drinking Water

Herriman City is working to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Lead and Copper Rule by identifying the materials used in water service lines to homes. We need your help to complete this important task. Below, you will find information on how you can assist us, detailed instructions on identifying your water service line material, and relevant federal information.

***Note: Herriman City will be performing water infrastructure upgrades and replacement in "Old Town" Herriman starting in summer 2024. While this survey is separate from that project, you may be interested in information about the work and impacts it will have to your neighborhood and water service. Your Participation is Crucial

To ensure the safety of our drinking water, we ask all residents to identify and report the material of their water service lines. Please complete our online survey using the link below. If you are unable to fill out the survey online, you can call the information and help hotline at 801-838-8360 for assistance, or we can arrange for someone to check your service line directly.

2. Understanding the Lead and Copper Rule (LCRR)

What You Need to Know

The Lead and Copper Rule, established by the EPA, aims to reduce lead and copper levels in drinking water. Identifying and replacing lead service lines is a critical part of this effort to ensure safe and clean drinking water for all residents.

3. How to Identify Your Water Service Line Material

Step-by-Step Guide

Follow these simple steps to identify the material of your water service line:

  1. Locate your water pipeline: Find where your water pipeline enters your home. This is usually in the basement on the side facing the street. Look for the section from the water shut-off valve to the outside of your property.

  2. Determine the Material: Use a coin and a magnet to test the pipe material. Here’s how to identify different materials:

    Lead pipe

    Lead: A dull silver-gray color that is easily scratched with a coin. A magnet will not stick.

    Galvanized pipe

    Galvanized steel: A dull silver-gray color that when scratched is shiny and silver. May be rusty, and a magnet will stick.

    Copper pipe

    Copper: The color of a penny. Scratching it with a coin will reveal a copper color.

    PVC pipe

    PVC (Plastic): A rigid, smooth plastic that may be colored blue or white.
